Smartphone stats 2020

Update 2021-05-12: Here’s another more recent take on the topic: Phones by the numbers: 22 surprising smartphone statistics

Here’s a guest post by Jodie Manners at UK Web Host Review, that’s in line with Abiro’s view of the market, and it’s a good read.

Why You Should Care About Mobile Marketing In 2020

The data on smartphone use is in! And it suggests that almost half the world’s population will be using a smartphone by the end of 2020. That’s 3.5 billion people… and rising.

And, while most people still don’t have access to internet via a desktop, the mini-computers we carry around in our pockets do pretty much the same job by connecting consumers to brands.

With the right knowledge and approach, your business can take advantage of this trend. To get you started, we’ve scoured the internet for the 2020 smartphone statistics that should drive your mobile marketing strategy this year. But why should you bother? Here are 4 reasons to care…

Smartphone use is increasingly global

If you have ambitions to tap into global market but haven’t found the right time to do it. It’s now! Why? Because…

  • Anyone who has the internet is a potential customer and…
  • Smartphone use is increasing in almost every country on the planet

Since you don’t need to build and manage expensive premises to reach people via smartphone, now really is the best time to reach beyond your borders.

Smartphones are always on

Half of all smartphone users check their phones first thing in the morning and, on average, we spend 2-3 hours a day glued to those tiny little screens. So, it’s no surprise that 66% of us admit that we’re probably addicted to our smartphones.

If you’re a marketer, that means you have an ‘always on’ audience that’s just waiting to chomp at the bit.
Smartphones and social media are made for each other

More than half of all social media engagement in the US happens on a mobile device. And this figure is likely to be much higher globally. Particularly in countries where the only internet-enabled device in the home is a smartphone.

Since social media marketing is one of the most effective lead generating strategies around, this works out pretty well for marketers and their businesses.

Smartphones are the home of localised search

If you do run a business with one or more physical premises, you might not be using mobile marketing to reach new and far-flung audiences. But, you should be using it to bring people to your door.

Fully 82% of smartphone users use their device to conduct localised searches (searches looking for location-specific goods and services). And more than half of reviews on platforms like Google are submitted by people from a mobile phone. Which means that both your footfall and your reputation depend on your business’s readiness for mobile.

Time for the stats

But, you don’t have to take our word for it. Check out the 2020 smartphone statistics in the infographic below and make up your own mind about the importance of mobile marketing.
