When talking engineers, the level of competency (including fundamentals like intelligence and creativity, that no education can “fix”) varies so widely that only idiots hire engineers without screening. In a startup, engineers also have to be very creative and communicative, something many engineers are not. I’ve seen the right engineers be able to easily do the work of 10 or more people, and fewer people in the company means much less administration and overhead.
